On 3 November 1957, Laika, a stray dog, became the first living creature launched into orbit, aboard the Soviet spacecraft Sputnik 2. It was a one-way trip for Laika, whose name is Russian for “barker”. Shortly after launch it emerged that she was destined to die in space.
